It doesn’t get much better than a delicious stir-fry that tastes like the center of an egg roll. This Deconstructed Egg Roll recipe is a low-carb meal the whole family will love and won’t leave you with that sluggish/brain fog.

By far, eating egg rolls when they are fresh and hot is my favorite, but by the 2nd or 3rd one, I have regrets. However, now that I have this yummy, flavor-packed recipe, it’s become a household favorite that we can’t get enough of because every bite is oh.so.good!

So What are Deconstructed Egg Rolls

Also called inside-out egg rolls or egg roll in a bowl, this dish is composed of everything you’d find in an egg roll minus the crunchy shell. This recipe is made with shredded carrots, cabbage, lean ground meat, seasonings, and minimal sesame oil. It’s just enough to give this dish that savory aroma and toasty sesame flavor. One bite and you can’t stop, but this time, there’s no guilt involved.

It’s comforting and satisfying at the same time, and much better for you than the take-out version.

How to Make these Deconstructed Egg Rolls

Unlike regular egg rolls, you won’t be rolling or frying. This is a simple stir-fry that comes together in less than 15 minutes. You can keep it low-carb by serving with cauliflower rice, or use regular rice, it’s completely up to you.

Alright, let’s get on with the recipe, here’s how to make an egg roll in a bowl!

  • Sauté
In a large skillet, sauté the onions, meat, seasonings, and Sriracha with sesame oil. Your kitchen is going to smell SO good.
  • Add the coleslaw mix
Add the coleslaw mix, soy sauce, and rice wine vinegar. Sauté until the cabbage is tender.
  • Cook the rice
Prepare the cauliflower rice or regular rice according to package directions.

All you need is a large skillet, fresh veggies, and your choice of ground meat. I often use pork for the flavor but you could use ground turkey, chicken, or beef, whatever you have on hand.

    • Sesame oil
    • Onion
    • Ground beef, chicken, or pork
    • Black pepper
    • Garlic powder
    • Salt
    • Sriracha
    • Coleslaw mix
    • Coconut aminos
    • Rice wine vinegar
    • Cauliflower rice or regular rice

Oh yes, this is the easiest way to enjoy Asian take-out without going anywhere or straying from any low-carb or clean eating goals.

Are Egg Rolls In A Bowl Whole30 approved?

You better believe it! This recipe for egg rolls in a bowl is paleo and whole-30 friendly. I often make this while doing the Family Kickstart Program or when I need a healthy dinner- fast.

Family KickStart is like Whole30 but created for busy families to eliminate processed foods and sugars in just 30 days.

Even if you aren’t eating paleo, Whole30, or any type of way, this dish is delicious, and don’t be surprised when you get requests for second helpings.

    Is this Recipe Keto-Friendly?

This recipe is relatively low-carb, with 12 grams of net carbs, but it’s still a little high on the keto spectrum which usually sets carbs at a 30-gram daily maximum. So it’s not the most keto-friendly option.

Where there are no added sugars to this recipe, they do show up in the carbs naturally occurring in cauliflower and cabbage. Mind you, the recipe also calls for 4 large servings, making it a meal, not a side.

However, if keto is something you want to look into but you aren’t sure where to start, I have a keto meal plan included in my Intermittent Fasting Guide for Women. The recipes are optimal in flavor and nutritional balance so you can feel your best while meeting those personal goals.

Plus, the additional insight on intermittent fasting also comes in handy if you are interested in keto.
