Unlike Valhalla, Assassins Creed Mirage is getting New Game Plus soon

To almost everyone’s surprise, Assassin’s Creed Mirage developer Ubisoft is confirming that an update including an unexpected Assassin’s Creed Mirage New Game Plus mode is on the way – and it’s on the way soon. While details are light, this could be an important addition to a game currently hemorrhaging players in the wake of new titles on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms.

It might be considerably shorter than most, but Assassin’s Creed Mirage is one of the best RPG games of the year and a fantastic return to form for the Assassin’s Creed series. As our Assassin’s Creed Mirage review reads, it’s proof that bigger isn’t always better and one of several new PS5 games and new Xbox games worth checking out when you get the chance. However, it’s also a title that we – and many others – thought was largely done and dusted after the handful of minor cosmetic content updates it has received post-launch. To everyone’s delight, though, Ubisoft seems to have other ideas.

Despite never really mentioning any sort of post-launch content updates in the build-up to release and in the weeks following, Ubisoft is confirming an update including New Game Plus mode (and an optional Permadeath setting for all difficulties) is on the way in December. As of right now, though, no specific date has been shared.

Assassin's Creed Mirage new game plus: the tweet confirming New Game Plus is coming

With the last Assassin’s Creed Mirage title update arriving on a Monday, we think it’s likely that the New Game Plus update will drop on either December 4, December 11, or December 18. There’s nothing to say it won’t drop on Christmas Day, December 25, but this seems very unlikely.

What makes this update a surprising one, even though Ubisoft is making it seem like it’s listening to fan requests in doing so, is the fact that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla doesn’t have a New Game Plus mode and is never getting a New Game Plus mode – even though it’s a game that would benefit hugely from having one. An Assassin’s Creed Valhalla New Game Plus mode would allow players to take advantage of the complex skill trees, avoid issues of over-leveling, and give players more reason to experiment with different character builds for Eivor. Assassin’s Creed Mirage just doesn’t need that; it doesn’t take long to unlock all the tools available and the skills aren’t as impactful on gameplay as you might think.

So, we can only hope that Ubisoft has something interesting planned for the upcoming New Game Plus mode for Assassin’s Creed Mirage. We don’t know any details just yet, but new contracts to complete and additional assassination targets outside of the Assassin’s Creed Mirage Order of the Ancients members would make it a worthwhile experience. If not, aside from the challenge a permadeath mode would offer (even though we played through the game without dying quite easily), there’s no real reason to play Assassin’s Creed Mirage a second time.

Still, it’s a great game to play through once and it might pop up among the best Black Friday PlayStation deals and best Black Friday Xbox deals when they’re all available in the coming days. If you’re still not sure on this one, though, you can find out where it ranks against the best Assassin’s Creed games in the series here.
