For 2002, Acura replaces it’s Integra with the the all-new RSX. Boasting more power and luxury than the Integra, the RSX is designed for youthful driving enthusiasts. The Type-S is powered by a version of the DOHC 2.0-liter engine that incorporates a higher-performance i-VTEC system. It helps to produce a remarkable 100 horsepower per liter (200 horsepower @ 7400 rpm). As the ideal complement to this powerplant, the RSX Type-S is equipped exclusively with an all-new, close-ratio, 6-speed manual transmission.
The Type-S uses the same high-performance VTEC design as the NSX, a three rocker arm system that varies the lift and duration of both the intake and exhaust valves for maximum power output. At lower rpm, the valves follow low lift, short duration camshaft profiles to help boost low-end torque. Above 5,800 rpm, the intake and exhaust valves are operated by high-lift, long-duration cam profiles, for maximum high rpm horsepower.
On the RSX, Acura uses the latest version of this engine system: i-VTEC. The i-VTEC system adds new VTC (Variable Timing Control) to VTEC to provide continuously variable camshaft timing – taking the concept of variable valve timing further. In short, i-VTEC = VTEC + VTC.
